Tune up guide

This is a short guide to help you keep your bike in working order, or spot any problems with your bike.

Check Before Riding Your Bike

Tyre Pressure

This can be found out using a gauge. The recommended tyre pressure printed on the sidewall of the tyre. Alternatevley you can try pressing the middle of the tyre in using your thumb. if you find it difficult to press in then the tyre is generally ok to ride on.

Are the brakes effective?

This can be done by pulling on the brakes before riding to check they are sharp. Also check the wear on the brake pads regularly as when they wear down to much they can score and damage the rim. Check for rust or damage to the cables.

Are the lights effective?

When battery powered lights begin to lose power it is gradual and hard to spot. Check that the lights are bright before riding at night. This can be done by shining them into someones eyes.

Check on a Weekly Basis

Condition of tyres

A tyre should be replace if it's looking cracked or spongy, worn or slashed as this could result in punctures or a blow out. Pick any glass or debris out of the tyre to prevent it from working it's way into the tyre.

Chain Lubrication

You should generally lubricate your chain on a weekly basis or after riding in wet conditions using a teflon based lubricant. avoid using thick oil as this tends to pick up dirt and cause excessive wear to the chain.

To oil your chain turn the pedals backwards to run the chain through a lube filled rag. You can then apply more lube to the clean chain. By Cleaning and oiling your chain you can greatly increase the life of your bike.

Are the cranks tight?

Check the cranks on your bike on a weekly basis. If they come loose and you continue to ride the bike they can be damaged beyond repeair. There is no limit to the tightness of alan key bolts on cranks.

Check on a Monthly Basis

Check Bottom Bracket

This is the main bearing on the bike (the one which takes all your weight). This can be checked by moving the cranks from side to side.

Check Headset

This is the bearing that allows you to steer. This can be checked by holding on the rear brake, turning the bars and moving the bars back and fourth. Any play in the bearing should become apparent. generally if you lightly drop your bike all the bearings should be silent.
